Pink suggests that our methods of managing people in the 21st century need an “upgrade” to what he calls “Motivation 3.0” – a more forward way of thinking that goes beyond “Motivation 1.0” where humans were motivated by fulfilling their basic needs and “Motivation 2.0” where human behavior can be shaped by rewards and punishments.

Before we review what “Motivation 3.0” is, let’s quickly review why Mr. Pink asserts that the old ways of motivating people are often ineffective. It’s important to understand that the tasks we ask people to perform fall into two broad categories – those that:

1) Follow a set of instructions down a single path to one conclusion.

2) Require experimentation to reach a unique solution.

Mr. Pink states that because 70% of job growth in the U.S. will come from the second type of work, managers need to adapt their approaches to creating work environments that promote the necessary behaviors and attitudes required to do this new kind of work.

So to motivate today’s worker, Motivation 3.0 encourages and promotes:

· Autonomy– simply another way to say “acting with choice”

· Mastery– which by necessity requires that people be engaged in their work

· Purpose– matching one’s aspirations to something greater than oneself

Putting the Ideas into Action

Let’s be honest – even the most interesting work can sometimes simply become just more work.

So outstanding managers, teachers, coaches, parents - leaders of all kinds - are those who “paint the big picture” (explain the vision and mission) for those on their team by:

1)Believing in and committing to the vision and mission – they live it and people see it.

2)Continually re-defining the mission and vision in words that connect to everyone.

3)Consistently reminding individuals how their work contributes to the mission and vision.

4)Catching people doing it right with praise like “That’s what great service looks like!”

5)Spotlighting the model behaviors and actions through recognition events.

Tue, 03 Jan 2012 21:14:14 GMTMake it a Memorable Holiday Season http://www.mtmrecognition.com/Post/Show/Make-it-a-Memorable-Holiday-Season-
I am afraid as I get older that I become more and more like the Grinch when it comes to Christmas. I even enjoy the Grinch's deep-voiced theme song in the Disney classic animated version. This year I have decided that to stop this negative slide, I at least have to determine the root cause of this continual evolution into further “Grinchiness”. The more I evaluate, the more I come to the inevitable, predictable, and seemingly widely held conclusion (outside of retail and economic circles) that Christmas has become too commercial. In fact, it is too much about "the stuff". Children make long lists of wants and continually research for further possible wants based on the principle that Santa grants them a blank check that will be cashed only by the asking. They count the days until they get their "stuff" and check off items as they are opened to make sure it is all there. My cynicism grows.

Gift giving, in any setting, can become "Grinchy" when it becomes about "the stuff" and the expectations/demands of the gift receiver. As we have been told since we were children, it is important to remember that the true value of gift giving is in the heart of the giver ("it's better to give than to receive") - in the meaning and motives of the presentation - of the special thoughts of the receiver as the uniquely individual and fitting gift is selected. These are also the gifts that tend to stand the test of time - that help the receiver to recognize the special bond with the giver - that cause remembrance of at least part of the story of the relationship - that may become treasured family heirlooms.

As we give and receive this Christmas season or any other season, let's do it from the heart and revive the true spirit of giving. Here's to a Meaningful, Memorable, and Merry Christmas.
Mon, 19 Dec 2011 22:23:50 GMTMTM Recognition Receives Quality Awardhttp://www.mtmrecognition.com/Post/Show/MTM-Recognition-Receives-Quality-Award
MTM was honored to be among three companies to be recognized recently at the Governor’s Mansion in Oklahoma City. Our Quality Management team including our President and COO was on hand to receive the Oklahoma Quality Award from Governor Fallin in early December. At the end of the year, employees have worked millions of hours and as a culture we like to celebrate after a job well done. This is a good time to set goals and create excitement as we look to the upcoming year.

Banquets can be memorable or humdrum. What makes a great banquet? A great theme where everyone participates and enjoys the event really helps Make it Memorable.

As an experienced provider of banquet awards for over 40 years, we have seen the best and the worst.

To help your banquet be the best it can be, here are some the most popular and engaging awards banquet themes:

Barbecue/Picnic-Relatively easy and relatively cost effective. This idea provides a casual setting for employees to feel comfortable while enjoying delicious barbecue! (Best if it can be outside – weather permitting)

Beach/Island-Everyone loves a vacation. It’s relaxing and a welcome change from the average routine! This theme helps make a fun environment where everyone can “escape” for a night!

Casino-Having games and prizes add a unique element of entertainment to a typical awards banquet. Casinos are fun and flashy, and this theme makes it easy to please the “full house”.

Decades-Afros, sock hops, leisure suits, or anything of your choice! This theme allows for total creativity and everyone to choose their favorite decade. A costume contest adds to the fun.

Mardi Gras-Who doesn’t love a good ol’ Cajun party? When you think of Mardi Gras you immediately think of fun and this helps employees lighten up outside of the workplace.

Nautical-This theme is fun for those who are on the ocean or lake when they’re away from the office. Having your banquet at a boathouse would add a nice touch to your celebration.

New York City-One of the country’s biggest tourist attractions is the City that Never Sleeps. Put on a fast paced and fancy replica of the place where everyone wants to be and celebrate your employees New York style!

Oscars/Grammys- Imitating a famous awards show provides a fantastic theme for your organization’s awards banquet. It’s nice to see co-workers in attire other than the regular “business casual”. Roll out the red carpet and show your employees you appreciate their “star” quality.

Patriotic- You can’t go wrong with red, white and blue, and make Uncle Sam proud at the same time. This theme would fit well if your awards banquet is a barbecue or luncheon. The theme would also serve well to recognize veterans or any military personnel within your organization.

Sports/Olympics- Whether you dress up as your favorite team or player or celebrate sporting events this theme appeals to the masses. Employees are the champions of your company; I read stat after stat and article after article. By all accounts I considered myself an engaged employee. I was in the “honeymoon phase”. What is the honeymoon phase? This is typically the first 6-12 months at a job, but can stretch to 18 months. At a very basic level we can understand it like this: anything new is exciting (for a time). My “smart phone” was exciting at first and a new puppy is fun in the beginning. But after the newness wears off, you get to the REAL stuff. Similar to a relationship or marriage, “it’s all so great a few months in”.

What is the REAL stuff? When they upload a video to YouTube or post their latest blog no one is asking what film school they attended or where they received their journalism degree. Creating an environment of meritocracy resonates. If you truly listen, trust and loyally follow - and from a group that grew up in a world of globalization, outsourcing, and corporate bankruptcies that’s significant.

Connect
This group has received more respect from their parents and teachers than any generation, and the quickest way to get them to shut down is to talk down to them. On the flip though, the best way to engage them is to really get to know them. Know their names, the projects they're working on, and spend enough time with them on a regular basis to set them up for success. Set clear boundaries and a structure that the employee can have autonomy in. Avoid generic advice. Give something that is concrete and actionable. They need to understand we’re all on the same team, and we’re working toward a particular goal together.

Retain
There is nothing more exciting/nerve-wracking than the first day on a new job. New hires walk in on fire, and you’re either going to throw water or gasoline on the spark. Millennials want to hit the ground running. Sticking them in an office and paying them to fill out forms and wait on things is a fast way to turn a good hire bad. They will feel you are wasting their time. You also don’t want to be put in a sink or swim situation either. Day 1 should be about connecting them to your mission. Make them feel like they belong, and build the foundation for continuous learning. A good hire will respect what you bring to the table, and they want you to respect what they bring to the table.
