"In everyone's life
at some time our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by
an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for
those people who rekindle the human spirit."
Albert Schweitzer
The need to be recognized is one of the most powerful and basic human needs. As children we ran around yelling, "look at me, watch me!" Even as adults, people yearn to be seen and heard, to be witnessed by someone else.
If you are employed among several hundred or thousand workers, it is easy to get lost in the shuffle.
We have a tendency to underestimate the importance of recognition. We tend to not do it as much as we should.
All great people share certain qualities—commitment, diligence, loyalty. They are the tough people who last through tough times. They deserve more than a handshake.
When you recognize your people, you tell them you'd hire them all over again. You let them know they are just as important as their performance.
Recognition is a reward to all involved. It’s nice to receive, to give and to witness. There is something deeply satisfying about thanking someone when it is clearly deserved.
Through the years, we've
seen a lot of award presentations and ceremonies. When the presentation
is done memorably, it inspires and motivates the entire audience as
well as honoring the recipient. Recognition done right engages, builds
belonging and self esteem for everyone involved in the process—not
just the awardee.
